ABOUT OILY RAG STUDIO

From an early age, I had an appreciation for art and felt drawn towards it.

At 18, I fell into motor racing and at 21 I decided to open my own repair business. Being a car guy, I always had a new project in the shop and this is when I fell in love with aluminium. I couldn't afford to buy some of the parts so I started building up skills and equipment to make my own.

On occasion, I would put these skills into art sculptures and lighting. I educated myself on design and colour, always interested in manufacturing process and bringing it all together.

I personally feel 70% of commercial lamps are boring.... white and chrome. But with a passion for sculpture and lighting, you can create some very unique, innovative and captivating designs.

My engineering skills have been incredibly valuable in this whole process, as each lamp is engineered from scratch, in all my designs lots of thought goes into the serviceability aspect with minimal complications while still being able to achieve the look I am are chasing.

After 39 years of running my business, it was time for a career change and to use the skills for something more creative that aligned with my passion.

I do take on commissions if they are within my scope of manufacturing skill set.

Most months something new is appearing in my gallery spaces, if you would like to see these please subscribe in the contact page.

I welcome Gallery visits, I would recommend you ring ahead and let me know as I sometimes work off site.
